It is very essential for a Muslim that as much focus is on fulfilling the rights of Allah by worshipping Him, similarly we should be fulfilling the rights of our fellow humans by aiding them as per our affordability. One of those way is by feeding them. Allah Almighty says in the Qura’an:

ويطعمون الطعام على حبه مسكينا ويتيما واسيرا

And they give food in spite of love for it to the needy, the orphan, and the captive,

انما نطعمكم لوجه الله لا نريد منكم جزاء ولا شكورا

[Saying], “We feed you only for the countenance of Allah. We wish not from you reward or gratitude. (Surah Al-Insaan 76:8, 9)

At Swansea Mosque & Islamic Community Centre, we provide our community with a foodbank service which has been running from January 2015.

As you may be aware, there is a large portion of the population, who are living below the poverty line, not just in Swansea, but all around the world. This is a major issue, especially in the contemporary world today, which needs to be addressed in the best possible way. It is our duty as human beings, to ensure that help and support for the less fortunate is being provided, and by opening a Food bank here in Swansea Mosque, has allowed us to help and meet the needs of these vulnerable people.

The main aim of opening our food bank was; simply to help the vulnerable and homeless people of Swansea, who are left with no food, shelter, clothing etc… Not only does our food bank provide basic necessities, but we also provide further support, to educate people through their difficult times.

The food bank is located within the Swansea Mosque and has supported people ranging from homelessness to emergency crisis. We help and support people from all faiths; nationalities and ethnic backgrounds, ensuring that all their needs are fulfilled.

The food bank provides service users with pre-packed boxes of necessary food to last up to two weeks.

  • Single person box – 7/8 items (Approximately cost is £1.50 per pack)
  • Family of two – 11 items (Approximately cost is £2.00 per pack)
  • Family more than 3- 15+ items (Approximately cost is £3.50 per pack)

Swansea Mosque food bank is a non-profitable organisation, which is sustained by both male and female volunteers in our Community. At this present time, members of our community, local Schools and businesses are supporting the food bank, and it is with their donations and substantial support that the food bank has been able to provide this service for the less fortunate.
